Earls Court & All That ~ 1973
There has probably been more written about Slade and 1973 than at any other period of their career. The year saw Slade go stratospheric in terms of column inches written, it would be impossible to do the year any justice in these brief timeline notes...but here goes!
Slade started this most eventful of years with their first number one Album when Slayed? finally nudged its way to the top of the charts as Slademania continued to grip the record buying public. The same day that it reached the top of the pile they played a showpiece gig at the London Palladium as part of the government of the day's 'Fanfare For Europe' celebratory events to signal Britain's entry into the common market, the forerunner of the crap European Union we all live in now.
Once the dust had settled they were off to sunnier climes to begin a stint in the Antipodean Colonies and the 'far east' to wild scenes at most of the gigs they performed as their catalogue of vinyl occupied most of the top positions in the Australian charts.
Back home, their first single of the year 'Cum On Feel The Noize' broke all selling records and crashed into the charts at the top, a feat that had not been achieved since the days of The Beatles. They were huge all over Europe and played at some stellar events on the continent before zipping off for a lengthy tour of Canada and the States. This was the market that they wanted to concentrate on in 1973, with all the success they were having everywhere else, the fact that they had not broken there was beginning to become an issue for the band and their management. They managed to get some coast to coast TV time which helped increase their visibility to the young American audience and by all accounts this tour was beginning to have an impact on their record sales.
Mid way through the year the band returned home in order to complete a national headline tour supported by Scotland's 'Sensational Alex Harvey Band' culminating in a couple of shows at the mammoth Earls Court in London before an estimated 40,000 people for the two shows, it was a triumph, as was the release of their second single of the year 'Skweeze Me Pleeze Me' repeated the feat of 'Cum On feel The Noize' by entering the UK singles charts at number 1.
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, Bang!
Slade drummer Don Powell was critically injured in a road traffic incident while returning home to Bilston after a night out at the Dix nightclub in Wolverhampton. His fiance was killed and Don himself was not expected to see out the night such were his injuries. Slade were in crisis and two showpiece gigs on the Isle Of Man were cancelled while the band contemplated their future.
In stepped Jim Lea's brother Frank the plumber who filled in for Don at the rearranged gigs while Powell, now off the danger list continued his rehabilitation from the life threatening injuries he received....news began appearing that he had lost his memory as well as his sense of taste and smell........
As soon as Don was able he was ushered gently back into the band starting with some recording work for the follow up to 'Skweeze Me Pleeze Me' and 'My Friend Stan' was duly recorded and released, failing to make the top of the charts while the band were on a gruelling 28 date coast to coast tour of America. The fact that the band were away didn't stop them racking up their second number one album of the year as 'Sladest' entered the chart at the number one position to give the band their second chart topping album.
They finished this eventful year with another heavy scheduled tour of Europe before putting their feet up to reflect on the success and bask in the glory of their fourth hit single of the year 'Merry Xmas Everybody' which unlike its predecessor did make the top of the charts by entering it at the number one slot, the third time in the year that the bands pre ordered sales had outsold all other records on sale to bludgeon its way into the chart at the top........
