Slade's Music press articles of note
pre 1969 inclusive
Ambrose Slade were no more and instead a new 'harder' less confusing name (Ambrose had often been misheard as armhole, Arnold or arsehole) of simply 'Slade' had been bestowed upon the band. .
The skinhead movement, based solely around fashion and reggae music, the skins had a reputation for terrace and street violence, this was to affect the band and their bookings, backfiring manager Chas Chandler's belief that a new image would propel them to stardom. Publicist Keith Altham was drafted in to make sure that all the right buttons were pressed and that the band received the required amount of news print space being given over to them in the music press of the day
Despite there being miles of column inches written about the band , the image didn't quite pan out as Chandler had expected and very little of what was written survived.....if you have anything, let me know!
Let's have a little look and see what has survived from those days of cherry red Doc Martins, Levi's, braces and Ben Sherman shirts......
