Slade's Music press articles of note
1978
1977 as Jim lea has often stated was like Pol Pot's year zero had now passed, it had not been a great year for the band, a year which they had hoped would cement them back into the conscience of music fans everywhere, alas, Slade were considered dinosaurs, old hat in the brave new world of snotgoblins, punks and scruffy looking talentless bastards. .
Slade were finding it almost impossible to get any radio play, certainly on a national level, even in their own stomping ground in the bleak country, they were now derided as also rans, not helped by some strange releases and the occasional childrens TV show appearance. Singles 'Give Us A Goal' a dreadful attempt to cash in on the World Cup fever of 1978 and 'Rock N' Roll Bolero' failed to make any impression on the charts of the day. There was no studio LP released during 1978 but we did get 'Slade Alive Vol 2' mostly recorded the year before at the rearranged gig at the Ipswich Gaumont, it sank without trace
The band still had to earn a living, and so began the slow decline into night club virtual obscurity where the band would play everywhere and anywhere that would book them, it saw the birth of the legendary 'Old Guard' 300 or so elite die hard Slade fans that would travel the length and breadth of the country to support the group when they needed them most, there will be a special arrticle coming in due course about the famed Old Guard! In addition the band managed to find their way on an adventure into deepest darlest Europe and Poland was to welcome the band with open arms!
What did the serious Music Press make of them and how was it reported? Let's see!
